Asked Questions We want to try and answer all the questions you have, but if there is still something we haven't answered on this page, ask at your next appointment or call either of our practice numbers.

| HOW MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE WILL ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT MAKE? | |
| Take a look through some of our case studies for patient before and after photographs. | |
| WHAT WILL I LOOK LIKE? | |
| Today's braces, especially the ones we use, are much smaller than they used to be. Therefore they look
a lot better. Most teenagers like to dress these up with different colored elastics that can be changed,
and it's now quite cool to have braces.
And just think what you're going to look like at the end of treatment! |
|
| DO BRACES HURT? | |
| Braces do not hurt. There are neither needles or injections. After a wire change you may feel a little pressure, but this should not last more than a couple of days. | |
| WHAT IF I HAVE REAL PAIN? | |
| Call the office to discuss the problem. | |
| WILL MY SPEECH BE AFFECTED? | |
| For the first day or two after you get your braces you will be aware of them, but soon they will become part of you and any speech problems will fade. | |
| HOW DO I CLEAN MY BRACES? | |
| Look at Brush and Floss. | |
| WILL MY BREATH SMELL? | |
| Since you have appliances in your mouth, your tongue cannot assist in cleaning, so we recommend that you clean your teeth after every meal. | |
| MUST I EAT SPECIAL FOODS WHILE I HAVE BRACES? | |
| You must be aware of what you eat and which foods to avoid, so read through Living with Braces. | |
| HOW LONG WILL TREATMENT TAKE? | |
| Treatment time depends on your original problem but an "average" time would be between 18 - 24 months. | |
| HOW OFTEN DO I HAVE TO VISIT? | |
| Appointments time can range from 15 to 60 minutes every 4 - 5 weeks to adjust the braces, change wires and make sure everything is OK. | |
| WHAT IS THE BEST AGE TO START TREATMENT? | |
| The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children be seen by an orthodontist at age 7. If you think your child may be in need of orthodontic treatment, look at Bite Down Early. | |
| HOW MUCH WILL BRACES COST? | |
| Cost vary and can only be determined by assessment on an individual basis. | |
| CAN AN ADULT HAVE ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT? | |
| You are never too old for braces. We provide orthodontic care for adults of all ages and the end result can be very rewarding. | |
| WHAT IS SURGICAL ORTHODONTICS? | |
| Sometimes when an adult has a skeletal problem, because growth has ceased, surgery can be an option. | |
| WHAT IF I BREAK MY BRACES? | |
| Treat it as an emergency and contact the office immediately. If you are away from home, cover with orthodontic wax so rubbing doesn't occur. | |
| WILL I HAVE TO HAVE TEETH REMOVED? | |
| Removal of teeth is sometimes necessary for orthodontic correction and depends on overcrowding and the skeletal pattern of the jaws. | |
| WILL I HAVE TO WEAR A RETAINER AFTER THE TREATMENT IS FINISHED? | |
| Yes,
teeth have a tendency to move slightly and a retainer is the best way to
minimize movement. Retainers allow the teeth, bone and surrounding gum tissue to stabilize
so that the bite establishes a permanent and stable position. |
